Plant Moisture Sensor

BME Instrumentation

Overview

Objective

Apply the concepts of instrumentation, signals, systems, and electronics to a real-life device

Create a plant alarm system that detects when the soil’s water level is too low, and stares at the user until the plant is properly watered

Process

Utilized a capacitive moisture sensor to measure moisture, and two ultrasound sensors to determine the location of the user

Manufactured the device with laser cutting by creating the design with a 2D design approach in Fusion 360

Used I2C protocol to communicate between two Arduino

Result

The device was successful at reading the moisture level of the soil and notifying the user when the level was below 30%

The high pitch “screaming” speaker proved to be effective at notifying the user. The pair of ultrasound sensors were effective at determining where the user was, so there is no escape
