Heart Beat Demostration

BME 214L Learning Assistance

Overview

Objective

Create a device that utilizes a heartbeat sensor for a fun demonstration on Arduinos and sensors for freshman students

Process

Utilized a heart rate sensor and Arduino to measure heartbeat

Digitally filtered the signal by using a moving average algorithm and a high pass threshold

Created a CAD model in Fusion 360 for a gear and pinion so a heart can move linearly with a servo motor

Manufactured the device by 3D printing the CAD models

Result

The device was able to measure heart rate ranging from 80 bpm to 100 bpm

A heart icon was successful at “bouncing” to the heart rate

Students were very impressed and lots of smiles were shown during the demostration
